Tail Squad
When thinking of a name for the squad I wanted to honor the man who rescued them. So I decided to work with the same first letters from Takis Shelter. Both in English as in my native language Dutch I could comprehense the first letters to form a concept meaning the same: 'Tail Squad' and 'Team Staart'. Now I had to find an artist who understood my mission and I ran into Mandy from Baby in Red. You must know, a few years ago I lost my brother in an accident and he was a real artist with a talent for drawing Disney-style. He would have loved to create the alter egos of our squad ... But sadly I can't undo what happened in the past and maybe it was fate, but when I met Mandy and saw her work, I felt the spirit of my brother. I told her all about my dream with our happy tails. She didn't even had to think about it! A beautiful friendship and partnership was born.
Hugo faced a lot of difficulties in life, yet he kept his will to live. He could have thousands of reasons not to love humans anymore but still he has so much love to give. In my mind I could see him wearing a red superhero cape. Red as the color of love, the love for the people who took care of him but also the unconditional love of Hugo for humans, despite being neglected while living as a stray.
His alter ego would be able to help children all over the world finding the strenght to grow in difficult times. So the feeling "happy" will be the theme of the book telling the story of Hugo.
Perla was treated badly, yet she trusted Takis who took her with him to the shelter. I imagined the alter ego of Perla wearing a blue superhero cape. Blue as a symbol of trust, a trust in people that got smattered but which she was able to regain when being rescued. Blue as a symbol of feeling secure in the safe environment we provide her, hoping one day she will gain full tust again. As she is the only member of the squad with no physical limitations, her mental scars have an enormous impact on her well-being.
Her alter ego will take children on a journey through all the emotions we can feel when someone hurts you. So the feeling "angry" will be the theme of the book telling the story of Perla.
Angel was found when she was in a lot of pain unable to see anything because her eyes were badly infected. Losing both eyes couldn't keep her from exploring and playing. She was a very brave little kitten without any fear for the other dogs and cats in the shelter. As long as there was food, she was happy. Especially when she smelled pizza or spaghetti, she went crazy! I thought of her alter ego wearing a green superhero cape. Green as a symbol for hope and as a symbol for having trust in whatever the future might bring without any fears.
The alter ego of Angel will take children on a journey through the feelings we have when we are scared or when we have to deal with fears. So the feeling "scared" will be the theme of the book telling the story of Angel.
Horus lost one eye making him look like a real pirate. But not only does he looks like one, he acts like one too. After his arival in Belgium, he ended up 3 more times in hospital ... Luck was by his side every time. I couldn't think of any other color then yellow for his superhero cape. Yellow as a symbol of action and being vivid.
The alter ego of Horus will get a special mission. Horus will take the children on a journey learning all about animal welfare and the work of Takis Shelter. His book will be the last one and it won't be an actual book. But for now, our lips are sealed!
Elda's life began very tragic ... She got hit by a car and was left for death next to the road. When Takis found her she was badly wounded and against all odds, she made it through surgery but losing her frontleg. She enjoyed exploring the shelter and the local shops. Somehow her life got connected by the loss of the two sister-puppies who both died of the Parvo-virus.
Because Elda loves shopping I couldn't have picked a better stereotype female color, so she got a pink superhero cape. In loving memory of the two puppies Lindy and Cindy, she will wear two stars on her cape.
Ass you can guess, Elda's alter ego will help children dealing with loss and grief but always keeping head high. 'Sad' will be the theme of the book telling her story.
